TEACHING ENGLISH based on my experience

After some years of experience, I have decided to write part of the pheomena that have occured during my teaching. The idea to write came to my mind after thinking of filing or saving part of the evidence that results from the teaching and learnng process. All this evidence has not scientific support but the results have been proved both the succesful linguistic activity that makes the student satisfied with his learning and the accomplisment of the English course goals. Both are important for me. However, most of the time, I pay more attention to pronunciation (Phonetics and English Phonology) which is the are that has helped me. Every single element thta I study or that is part f my research on pronunication, I share it with my students and people in general. I have no probems to do that. Most of the time, if not always, I finish classes very happy because I get what I want from the class. Additionally, every situation in class becomes an important part of my research side.

MAJOR PROBLEMS IN TEACHING ENGLISH

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

One of the major problems in every student, young or adult, is the lack of knowledge in their first language - Spanish. So, I have to invite them to learn more and more in their first language.

LACK OF GRAMMAR

This is another important factor that is faced by students.

LACK OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING TECHNIQUES OR STRATEGIES

WELL, I start every interview asking them some questions about it and asking them to use their best strategies to remember somthing, unfortunatelly, 99% of them are not able to remember. I am sure that this happens because of the lack of both a technique and a strategy.

JULY 2021

CASE 1

Emiliano Seg.

Goal: to imporve his grammar, vocabulary, and pronunication.

Characteristics:

Private classes in classroom using computers.

Level A1.

Enjoys these English classes

He has studied English for 6 years in a primary school.

After 4 months of classed, he has imporved his pronunciation.

We have been working with grammar and English phonology. Eeverything has been archived in PowerPoint.

At the moment, he writes facts or summaries related to the book Tom Sawyer and Pinocchio. He uses phonetic transcriptions and he is able to read them. His readings are recorded on the same PowerPoint. Before these recordings, he makes a double check of the segmental pronunciation by looking up the words in the Cambridge dictionary.

Since he is going to start studying the secondary school, I try to make him  learn the vocabulary for KEYT examination. From my experience, this will help him a lot.
