COLLOCATIONS

A collocation is two or more words that often go together. These combinations just sound "right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. A combination of incorrect words may be unnatural and just sound "wrong".

Collocations

Este término se refiere a la combinación de palabras que suelen ir juntas en inglés. Dependiendo de la combinación, podemos distinguir entre “grammatical collocations” y “lexical collocations”.

How can collocations motivate second language learners?

Are collocations really important as to be remembered all of the time?

How would you learn them if you don't live in an English speaking country?

How many collocations am I using in this section?

Do collocations exist in your first language?

Paying attention to the way an English word should be pronounced and what it means is good, but you will have more success in the mastery of this language if you pay attention to the words that accompany this word. Proficient learners know the importance of this issue. Developing the acquisition of collocations may take some time, but it is worth.

Why to learn Collocations?

If I don't learn them, I will make bad mistakes all of the time when I'll try to speak or write in English. People may not understand what I am saying That's why I must learn collocations!

Si no mejoro el uso de las colocaciones o collocations, posiblemente cometa errores garrafales al hablar o al escribir.

TIP: Use a powerful strategy lo learn collocations and put them in your brain.

TIP: Usa una de tus mejores estrategias para aprender y mete las colocaciones en tu cabeza.

HOW WORDS WORK TOGETHER

Collocation

In corpus linguistics, a collocation is a sequence of words or terms that co-occur more often than would be expected by chance. In phraseology, collocation is a sub-type of phraseme. An example of a phraseological collocation, as propounded by Michael Halliday, is the expression strong tea. While the same meaning could be conveyed by the roughly equivalent *powerful tea, this expression is considered incorrect by English speakers. Conversely, the corresponding expression for computer, powerful computers is preferred over *strong computers. Phraseological collocations should not be confused with idioms, where meaning is derived, whereas collocations are mostly compositional.

There are about six main types of collocations: adjective+noun, noun+noun (such as collective nouns), verb+noun, adverb+adjective, verbs+prepositional phrase (phrasal verbs), and verb+adverb.
