Welcome to the page of SOCIOLINGUISTICS

Every language teacher should be knowledgeable for it!

Put the Sociolinguistics in your bag and based your everyday experience on it. If you understand Sociolinguistics well, that understanding will put you in a higher level of knowledge of what is needed to make classes more interesting

What is a language if you discard it from the culture to which it belongs?

Your language is you !

Octubre, 2016.

Imagine that you go to class to learn but the class is not provided in your mother tongue! What possibility do you have to acquire knowledge?

Quechua Aymara are some of the 45 languages spoken in Peru. The educational program called Educación Intercultural Bilingüe (EIB) promotes the idea of setting, in the classrooms, teachers who can master the mother tongue of students besides Spanish so that children will have the opportunity to understand Spanish language during classes. It is estimated that there are 1 million of children who do not speak Spanish in Peru. Hence the importance of the EIB.

The video below talks about this situation. It is Spanish.

Video: Entrevista EIB / Interview EIB

EIB aims at making children learn their first language and then start learning Spanish.

UNICEF supports this program

Teachers EIB must be proficient in both languages. Bilingual teachers.

The problem is that some communities have no bilingual teachers, However Peru is working hard on it.

Teaching materials are needed for this project. So, material for these purposes are being edited.

Teachers must be part of the communities where EIB is applied.

Since Shipibo language has not a writing system, EIB must pay attention to the way of producing teaching materials because they must include words.

Linguistic variation / Variación lingüística

If you listen to people around you when they speak, you will notice that they use spoken language according to socio-cultural, contextual,  geographical, and historical factors.
