VOCABULARY is an important factor that can promote self-confidence in L2 learners.

Morphology

Lexicon: mental listing of the words in a language, including information about their meaning, grammatical function, pronunciation, etc.

Vocabulary

Practice every day and be active. Don't stay too long in only one subject

Language is an active phenomenon. All of the time, it is changing. Among those changes, the new expressions or words are part of human evolution. It is important to be prepared to acquire the new vocabuary if you really want to be more compettitive in communication fields.

Si te das cuenta, el aprendizaje de vocabulario es una constante en casi cualquier persona independientemente de su actividad, ya que el lenguaje es dinámico y todo el tiempo están surgiendo palabras o modismos que uno sólo llega a entender si se da a través de la cultura y el contexto en el cual surgen.

Remember; every single technique or strategy I have written or analyzed may be only the beginning of the cognitive work. I am convinced that everything is connected in the learning process. Reflection on each vocabulary issue may take you to other fruitful learning forms.

Muchas de las ideas con fundamento cognitivo que en esta sección encontrarás sólo son una mínima parte de lo que tú puedes hacer para aprender vocabulario. La reflexión de cada técnica o estrategia que aquí comparto hará que tú mismo encuentres formas más precisas de aprendizaje.

De mis DESCUBRIMIENTOS e INVENCIONES para APRENDER en un "CHAS" / My DISCOVERIES and INVENTIONS to learn or create VOCABULARY faster!

NOTE:

The necessity to learn English has taken me to a total immersion in the language. This immersion has brought some INVENTIONS or THEORIES based on the way I feel the things should happen in our brains in order to learn faster. Prodigious minds could be developed by mechanisms that generate constant and automatic memories

Invention 1: ARTIFICIAL INTERLINGUA. Every human being, in capacity to learn, should create a bridge between their mother tongue and the target language. After years of observation in the cognitive processes of some Mexicans living in the USA, I could observe that some of them have a major facility to learn if they are able to establish English words in their own language. I tried this and I could confirm that if we use both languages to create a new one, the one I have called INTERLINGUA, it will give us the chance to use the words and expressions in a way that will facilitate our use and understanding of them. So, the insertion in the second language will be only a piece of cake.

Invention 2: Orthographic and phonological washing. With the purpose of discovering the clarity of the way the words are, I insisted in developing mechanisms that could help me to acquire words in the second language. Fisrt, I use the Spanish language as a way to approximate my ideas about it. Then , I took words from other languages, even those languages apparently complicated because of their agglutination, in order to see how well this process would function. At the end I used English language. The result is the facility to learn any language. For example; ONLY TOO in the sentence "I am only too pleased to help" (Oxford dictionary) will be obtained by its own washing process or from its inverse process:

onlituonlituonlituonlitunlitunlitunlitunlitultuntuntuntuntutuntuntuntantantantantantuntantuntantantantan

In the former process, there's a formula established in this way: X=10 (in which 10 is original) to X=10- inner spaces of X (which corresponds to the increase of the velocity of the oral activity).

Invention 3: Orthographic development of the languages. I deduced that inside the structure of each word there's a something familiar to the ability of the learner. This ability is born of the intense curiosity to discover.

Invention 4: LOGICAL CONCEPTUALIZATION. In this case, the process is what is really happening in my head. It would be great to see if I am able to make others learn this processes with the same positive results. It really works!

TIP: Fundamental idea; identify the function of every word in the lexical structure!

TIP: Don't segment the pronunciation too much. It may end up in a Stacatto-like fluency.

TIP: Identifica la categoría gramatical que cada palabra tiene en las estructuras léxicas.

TIP: No segmentes ni estilices la pronunciación en forma de stacatto (palabra por palabra).

December 2017. Have you Spanish speakers and learners ever realized that some bilingual dictionaries like the Oxford one contains translation forms based on Spanish language of Spain?

Words or expressions like "tiquismiquis", "Gozne", "estar hasta las narices", "no dejar piedra sin voltear", etc., may be difficult to understand for my Mexican learners because those words or expressions are not part of our Spanish in Mexico.

Debemos tener cuidado con las traducciones que nos ofrecen los diccionarios como el Oxford, ya que algunas de ellas sólo se usan en España. Esto podría afectar enormemente la comprensión del idioma meta.

November, 2017: if you are able to learn synonyms of words in your own language, you will be able to add English words as synonyms with those for your own benefit. This idea was developed on my own and I think that it's working. :)

November 14. 2017

Think about the way to understand what you see and read. If you are a foreign learner try to understand ceratin ideas in your own language.

Reflexiona sobre la forma efectiva de aprender vocabulario. esta parte es un poco compleja. Dependerá de tu grado de lectura y conocimiento general y lingüístico para generar ideas que fortalezcan los conceptos que subyacen a la lengua.

Example:

In the dictionary: "The book is compulsive reading" .... In my head; "The book is synonymous with compulsive reading"

In the dictionary: The food was terrific value" ... In my head; "The food is synonymous with terrific value"

Think about the idea that your dictionary is a lot of your lexicon. Learn to use it and soon you'll have a full command of the target language.

Usa el diccionario como método. Desarrolla una forma personal de darle uso. la gloria del uso de vocabulario estará en lo portentoso de tus ideas.

October 17, 2017. Make vocabulary be contundent in specific contexts that help you globilize your learning. One of the ways to learn vocabulary is to put everything in contundent contexts where words, expressions, meanings, and language skills are involved. Think about the creation of this contexts.

Crea contextos emblemáticos y concisos en donde lo aprendido encuentre utilidad.

October 9, 2017. Try this learning strategy for learning vocabulary: read one of your favorite topics for 1 or 2 minutes in full concentration. Then, try to remember important words. Open another site, post, or reading. Repeat the initial strategy. Keep going and coming with all what you learn. It works also when you are learning words of different languages.

Concéntrate durante uno o dos minutos en un tema. Salte de la lectura y repasa en tu mente las palabras más importantes. Abre otro libro o página web, o incluso otro idioma, y repite la técnica. Ejercita esta estrategia y pronto comprobaras su importante valor.

October 5, 2017. Sometimes there's no need to know grammar at all if you're abe to develop connections among words. Be in contact with everything because you are now the center of everything (Ruben).

Learning a language involves full concentration and practice.

Aprende a manejar tu memoria. Aprende estrategias con las que logres mantener una memoria a largo plazo de elementos lingüísticos que se encadenan, como en las oraciones.

Connect your mind with active speech: learning strategy based on the context (no details)

It's simple; when teaching or learning vocabulary, use contexts of everyday life. From my experience, it really works. No matter how difficult the word or expresion is, if you have identified and understood the strengthens of learning in context, you have understood everything about the ease with which our brains will acquire the language. Of course, at the beginning it will be slower, but with the time it will make you stronger. This activity and others may be connected with collaborative learning.

Note: The Cambridge Dictionary, words and expressions of other languages have been used to prove the effectiveness of this strategy.

Cuando pienses en aprender vocabulario, piensa bien cómo lo quieres aprender y sobre que contexto. Identifica las formas cognitivas que envuelven las actividades de la vida diaria y deja volar tu imaginación. Compromete el vocabulario idioma inglés de manera práctica, innovadora, en contexto, y sobre exigencias, tal y como lo exige la competitividad de cualquier actividad.

Nota: Esta actividad la uso con el diccionario Cambridge e inserto expresiones o palabras de otros idiomas.

I like to use some activities together to learn the VERBS, the NUMBERS, and the PRONUNCIATION. I use the BINGO CHIPS, the LIST OF VERBS, the BASTA or STOP GAME.

1. Learn the 10 first verbs (regular or irregular).

2. Learn the numbers up to 10.

3. Distribute the Bingo chips. Count the chips according to the number of verb you want to say.

4. Press the button of the BASTA game. The closk will start running.

4. Use English for all what you want to say; "Say in Spanish the verb number two AACEPT. Count one by one each of the chips and when you finish counting (with the clock running) let the other player say the verb. At the begining. you guys can check the sheets. Later, try to memorize them. (November, 2019).

VARIATIONS:

Give the frst letter of the verb.

The competitor will say the verb in a short sentence.

Take your time to write it in  apiece of paper before saying it. (This activity may require more time).

NOTE: I use ssomethign similar, but with cars when I taught the numbers in ITALIAN to my little nephew.

Historias a través de asociaciones para estudiantes Mexicanos de inglés

Historias basadas en asociaciones como una herramienta auxiliar en el aumento del léxico del estudiante de inglés

Stories told through associations in the mind

Learning vocabulary through associations as a tool to increase the English lexicon of Mexican students

Aunque el nivel para trabajar con estas actividades es A2, cualquier persona de todo nivel podría utilizarlo para aprender y recordar vocabulario.

Though the suggested level to use this strategy is A2, any person can use it to learn and remember vocabulary.

As a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, I could hardly remember some of the Chemical elements. Many years later, I discovered that making connections to learn these elements could help me to tie all the elements that I wanted. It's because the ease with which my brain connected them was astonishing as well as fast for me. Like many of the learning activities, it requires practice.

The plan to use Mnemonics may become essential if we determine that some languages like Russian, Hungarian, or Turkish have combinations of words which are different to those used in the Spanish or English morphology and which has relation with the Phonotactics of each language.

Objetivo:

Desarrollar la ortografía, escritura, y una pronunciación aproximada a la de la lengua inglesa a través de asociaciones e historias figuradas

To develop English orthography, and an approximated pronunciation through associations in mnemonics.

Objetivos específicos:

Aprender la ortografía del idioma inglés / To learn English orthography

Incrementar el léxico del estudiante en el idioma inglés / To increase students' lexicon

Mantener una memoria a largo plazo de las palabras y expresiones aprendidas / To keep words or expressions in a long term memory

Pregunta / Question

¿Por qué usar las asociaciones e historias combinando el español y el inglés? / Why a combination of Spanish and English stories?

Porque como mexicanos que aprendemos o enseñamos el idioma inglés, y cuya lengua materna es el español, es importante reconocer que la mayoría de las veces nos apoyamos en diccionarios o explicaciones bilingües para poder entender de manera más precisa el significado de palabras a través de una traducción o calco que agilice nuestro proceso de aprendizaje y enseñanza en el tipo segunda lengua. Incluso, en las clases de inglés los maestros desde el primer día nos enseñan una estructura básica para preguntar por las cosas; How do you say “garza” in English ? O How do you say “hombre” in English?  Pensamos que ante esta situación sería importante conocer las palabras o expresiones en ambas lenguas, español e inglés.

Ahora bien, con el dominio progresivo de esta estrategia de aprendizaje de vocabulario, el aprendiente podrá en un momento atreverse a ir eliminando paulatinamente el idioma español y mantener las asociaciones e historias sólo en el idioma inglés. Pero esto dependerá de la necesidad y motivación de cada persona.

Nota: Usa esta técnica. ¡Te aseguro que funciona!

For our Mexican students may be easier to learn by making associations with elements of the Spanish language. Combining Spanish and English may produce a positive effect when learning a word or expression in the target language. It's important to mention that this kind of exercise needs constant practice.

Note: I assure you it really works!

La sección de este sitio web te ayudará a: / This section will help you to:

•Aprender a escribir palabras en inglés / To write English words

•Desarrollar tu memoria / To develop your memory

•Desarrollar tu imaginación para asociar la formación de palabras y las palabras en inglés con otras del español / To increase the way to associate words

•Acercarte al sistema fonológico (pronunciación) de la lengua inglesa / To approach the English phonology

•Desarrollar tu aprendizaje abstracto que es el que se necesita en el aprendizaje de una lengua / To develop your abstact learning

•Familiarizarte con vocabulario de la lengua inglesa / To identify English vocabulary

•Reconocer palabras inglesas en materiales impresos como libros, revistas, y en páginas de internet. / To recognize vocabulary on the internet pages

•Generar ideas para realizar tus propios enunciados / To be creative to write your own ideas

•Además podría facilitarte el estudio del inglés, ya que puedes descargar los videos que aquí se presentan. / To facilitate your way on English language

Recomendaciones de esta estrategia para obtener mejores resultados / Recommendations

•Utiliza de preferencia lugares en donde tu concentración y voz alta se manifiesten libremente.

Dedica poco tiempo y ejercita mentalmente estos ejercicios. Vuelve a dedicar tiempo.

•Avanza progresivamente.

Instrucciones sobre el uso de los materiales / How to use the materials prepared for learning through mnemonics

•Dale clic en cada video y/o audio, ya que en ellos hemos almacenado la información que aparece en los visuales y también se hace la pronunciación de las palabras en inglés. / After reading the instructions, click on each video. You may like the idea of downloading them. Go ahead!

Note: Once you get the general idea of the way mnemonics works, try mnemonics with your own inventions or connections.

Objetivo de los siguientes materiales

Dar a conocer como funciona la estrategia por asociaciones y sus posibles alcances

The materials introduce and depict the way how associations are created in the mind.

Información adicional / Additional information

WORKING MEMORY MODEL

Learning proccessed all what we hear or see. According to Alan Baddeley (2000), repetitions are needed as to remember things.

¿Que es la memoria operativa? / What is Working Memory?

  • De acuerdo con Ruiz-Vargas (2010), la memoria operativa se lleva a cabo a través de procesos complejos en nuestros cerebros. La información en nuestros cerebros se almacena y se recupera para posteriormente ser usada. Para llevar a cabo estas fases es necesario que haya una actividad en la que los fenómenos u objetos aprendidos se puedan utilizar.

  • Baddeley (1986) states that the memory of a human being has the capacity to store information that a person can use later. Some complex tasks such as language comprehension involve learning and temporary storage.

  • Marschark and Spencer. (2011) mention that working memory refers to the brain capacity to store an use the information when it is needed.

6. found: encontró (pasado del verbo find: encontrar)

Con mnemonics: una fundación encontró una foto de una letra "d".

7. up to 77%: hasta un 77%

Con mnemonics: hasta hoy recordé que me gusta mucho el refresco Seven up. Tony, mi hermano, consume hasta un 77% del refresco Seven up todos los días

Ahora como ejercicio intentemos entender las palabras y expresiones expuestas en el siguiente párrafo.

Mnemonics are memory devices that help learners recall larger pieces of information, especially in the form of lists like characteristics, steps, stages, parts, phases, etc. We knew back in 1967 from a study by Gerald R. Miller that mnemonics increased recall. He found that students who regularly used mnemonic devices increased test scores up to 77%!

De esta manera se ha comenzado uno de los trabajos de familiarización con vocabulario de la lengua inglesa.

Nota: después de cada 15 minutos de ejercicio con mnemonics en el que incluyas un repaso significativo en tu mente o en voz alta es recomendable tomar una pausa, ya que tu atención podría perderse o un cierto porcentaje del total de contenido aprendido podría perderse o costar más trabajo recuperarlo. Recuerda hacer repasos constantes. A mayor repaso mayor dominio de la información.

Philosophy

"There is no more powerful weapon than the mind. And he who has control over the mind has control over everything".

You may not believe it, but the mind is the most powerful weapon that we have to learn.

Tal vez no lo creas, pero la verdad es que la mente es el arma más poderosa que tenemos para llevar a cabo aprendizajes de calidad y de gran volumen. A mi en lo personal me encantó lo que el personaje de Kalimán decía.

Using technique that really help us to learn

I spent many years without opening a book. I used to do kind of trivial or monotonous activities and hardly ever would read or would do something to activate my brain. On the other hand, as a worker of farms or construction companies, I was accostumed and trained to achieve manual activities and the use language in those conditions to express ideas was more simple. The intellectual part in those jobs was not a paramount activity.

With the time, I have realized that my brain needs to be worked out too. Specially now that I am part of a group of an MA in Applied Linguistics. lol. I was accostumed to use basic or simple language with my friends and family. I hardly ever was interested in learning new information, except it had to do with an activitiy that could involved a physical effort.

Nowadays, I use different techniques that can help me to increase my lexicon not only in Spanish , but in English and in other languages too. This situation has pushed me to try different strategies in order to select the most effective ones. I must say that none teacher has helped me. To be honest, teachers hardly ever pay attention to the diagnostic of students' needs.

I sometimes ask my friends and contacts of other languages to share words or expressions with me. For example, many of my Arabic friends send me a word within an expression (implicit grammar) so that I can copy and hear the audio they also share with me via "whatsapp". My work is to use that expression or word (s) in 2 or 3 learning techniques I have developed before. Later, I use it or present it with friends or family.

One of the most powerful ways to learn new vocabulary is by using it, so I use it in the comments section on Facebook or any other online social net.

One of the most effective ways I have learned these days is the one in which I use visuals to describe phenomena, events, historical aspects, etc. The point is to make you become a constant user of what you have learned. Grasp the idea and don't let it go. Talk about your topic in different times of the day and through the whole week. Doing that you will be fixing significant learning.

In the example below (visual), you will see the "rain cycle". It is an easy theme to start using a VOCABULARY learning technique.

Ana jai3 = tengo hambre / I am hungry.

Ana atshan= tengo sed / I am thirsty.

Ana ta3ban= estoy cansado / I'm tired.

Ana monhakon= estoy agotado / I'm beat.

Ana odto= ya regresé / I'm back

Ana ostad alinjlinziya = Soy maestro de inglés / I'm an English teacher.

Usa un diccionario bilíngüe si eres principiante / Use a bilingual diccionary if you are a beginner.

How To Order Burger King Like A Boss

If you are able to create ways to learn vocabulary, you are ahead of other learners. Watch the video and see if you are willing to invent and try your own form to learn vocabulary. Hats off to you if your techniques or strategies are as good as to remember what you learn for longer periodS of times.

Estoy seguro que el aprendizaje de vocabulario es más fácil hoy en día gracias a que las nuevas tecnologías y la internet facilitan el aparente acercamiento virtual de las personas para conocer lo que otras personas hacen e innovan. El video How To Order Burger King Like A Boss te podría ser de ayuda para adaptar y aplicar una técnica que para mi gusto es muy valiosa y contundente.

My experience as a student of Russian.. I failed.

Many years ago, I tried to learn Russian in Mexico City, but I failed. Our Russian teacher at the Russian Embassy never shared with us strategies to learn vocabulary or to master the language structures. That was a pity because if she would've wanted to make the students continue for the next term, she should've done efforts to tell us the way to learn the language.

Most of the students who want to learn a new language lack of strategies to learn it. Teachers hardly ever tell you how to master it, and many students quit because they feel frustrated when they realize that they are not improving.

The traditional way to learn vocabulary is through reading, and some students ignore other possibilities mostly because teachers do not talk baout them.

I feel fine now because I am able to learn vocabulary through different strategies.

About the workshop in TLAXCALA (November 9, 2016)

Depending on the use of the VOCABULARY, it may become part of the PRODUCTIVE OR RECEPTIVE LEXICON.

I agree on the idea that vocabulary is important, but techniques to learn it are essential in order to remember it longer.

Most of the ways I have invented or used of other authors have helped me to recognize words or expressions when native speakers say them, and that's great becasue I feel that I can understand the meaning of their ideas.

From the workshop we gave in Tlaxcala, Mexico

The following visuals were part of the Power point presentation we present during the workshop of vocabulary and jazz chants at the University of Tlaxcala in Mexico. We elicit students to create rhythms so that they could introduce new vocabulary and work with meaningful learning. Below, there are some audios which were part of this project.

Del taller que dimos en Tlaxcala

La presentación que desarrollamos en la universidad de Tlaxcala quedó a cargo de una compañera y yo. Aquí les comparto las diapositivas más representativas de ese taller sobre vocabulario que tuvo como base fundamental el ritmo a partir de los jazz chants. Más abajo vienen algunos audios que fueron parte del proyecto.

Work and demonstration over learning through rhythms

November 12, 2016

Yesterday, my students used the rhythms to learn vocabulary and longer structures during the class in which I applied the workshop based on rhythms. During the session, I was able to guide the students through three fundamental steps. The first one was to create the rhythm as in "Fast food restaurant chain, fast food restaurant chain. McDonalds is a fast food restauran chain". The second one observed the organization of questions and answers like in the following rhythmical dialogue (observe the visuasl with the text above):

Student A: "Hamburguers and fast food, hamburguers and fast food. Does McDonalds serve hamburguers and fast food?"

Student B: "Hamburguers and fast food, hamburguers and fast food. McDonalds serves hamburguers and fast food".

Student A. Question: "Founded in 1940, founded in 1940. What was founded in 1940?".

Student B. Answer: "Founded in 1940, founded in 1940. McDonalds was founded in 1940".

Finally, I discovered that some students need more work on pronunciation and accent. So, I recommended them to use the same rhythms to focus on the parts of the phonology which could cause them problems to them. Additionally, I gave them some recommendations based on my experience and use of language with American or Canadian people when I told them that some sounds could be avoided when giving utterances to their ideas such as the omission of the sound /t/ in "Fast food".

It is important to mention that learners using this learning strategy should make sure that the words and expressions have been fixed in their minds so that they can use them successfuly in comunnicative events or while writing a text. If you are not able to say them, you need more practice!

Trabajo durante el pilotaje de los instrumentos_ Demostración del uso de ritmos en texto

Trabajo durante el taller de Jazz chants and vocabulary learning

El trabajo que se llevó a cabo durante el taller Jazz chants and vocabulary learning se basó en una serie de diapositivas en las que mostrábamos con ejemplos y actividades los aspectos del uso de los ritmos. El taller sirvió para orientar a los alumnos en 3 aspectos fundamentales. El primero basar la creación del modelo de repetición sobre los ritmos marcados con palmadas (jazz chants) que van desde vocabulario simple hasta estructuras más largas e incluso complejas. Por ejemplo; “Your name, your name. What’s your name?” o formas de alentar a alguien como en “Good luck on your test o Keep up the good work”. El segundo aspecto demostró que un texto cualquiera es rico en contenido y que se puede utilizar para tomar información de él. Esto implicó el uso de preguntas y respuestas de la información de un texto sobre la cadena de restaurantes McDonalds. Por ejemplo;

Student A. Question: "Founded in 1940, founded in 1940. What was founded in 1940?".

Student B. Answer: "Founded in 1940, founded in 1940. McDonalds was founded in 1940".

Rythms and melodies that were worked during the workshop of vocabulary

Lo que trabajamos en el taller de vocabulario

Press the play button so that you can hear some of the melodies I have invented in order to remember vocabulary. Try to connect more vocabulary with your own ideas.

From my experience, one of the biggest advantages of using rythms is that students can hum the melody they invent as many timmes as they want.

Presiona el botón de play para escuchar algunas de las melodías que he inventado para recordar vocabulario. Intenta conectar más vocabulario con tus propias ideas.

A partir de mi experiencia, los ritmos me dejan una huella más permanente de lo que aprendo al intentar recordar cada uno de ellos. Estos ritmos se exponen en los audios de abajo.
